Player Agency in Interactive Narrative: Audience, Actor & Author
نویسندگان
چکیده
The question motivating this review paper is, how can computer-based interactive narrative be used as a constructivist learning activity? The paper proposes that player agency can be used to link interactive narrative to learner agency in constructivist theory, and to classify approaches to interactive narrative. The traditional question driving research in interactive narrative is, ‘how can an interactive narrative deal with a high degree of player agency, while maintaining a coherent and well-formed narrative?’ This question derives from an Aristotelian approach to interactive narrative that, as the question shows, is inherently antagonistic to player agency. Within this approach, player agency must be restricted and manipulated to maintain the narrative. Two alternative approaches based on Brecht’s Epic Theatre and Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed are reviewed. If a Boalian approach to interactive narrative is taken the conflict between narrative and player agency dissolves. The question that emerges from this approach is quite different from the traditional question above, and presents a more useful approach to applying interactive narrative as a constructivist learning activity.

متن کاملAgency Play: Dimensions of Agency for Interactive Narrative Design
Agency in interactive narrative is often narrowly understood as a user’s freedom to either perform virtually embodied actions or alter the mechanics of narration at will, followed by an implicit assumption of “the more agency the better.” This paper takes notice of a broader range of agency phenomena in interactive narrative and gaming that may be addressed by integrating accounts of agency fro...

Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques are widely used in video games. Recently, AI planning methods have been applied to maintain plot consistency in the face of player’s agency over the narrative. Combined with an automatically populated player model, such AI experience managers can dynamically create a consistent narrative tailored to a specific player. These tools help game narrative desig...

متن کاملApproaching a Player Model of Game Story Comprehension Through Affordance in Interactive Narrative
A growing body of work in games research, both generative and analytic, seeks to characterize the relationship between a player’s understanding of an interactive narrative and her options for action within it. This paper provides several definitions that collectively serve as a basis for a model of the user’s comprehension of an unfolding story in a game. Central to this approach, we define the...
